It is important to actively manage your child’s oral health. Children, like adults, are prone to many dental issues; therefore, dental examinations are necessary. It is advisable that you bring your child to a dentist for a regular examination as soon as their first teeth emerge to promote their oral health and ensure the proper development of their teeth.
What Does Children’s Dentistry Involve?
At Jonathan C. Wang DDS, Inc., in Pleasanton, California, Dr. Wang provides both preventive and restorative procedures for children which includes:
Dental Cleanings
When children’s teeth are exposed to plaque, tartar, bacteria, and other substances for too long, this may lead to toothaches, tooth decay, and other dental problems. When you bring your child to our office, we will perform a full examination and a professional dental cleaning.
Routine cleanings can help identify and prevent cavities caused by excessive sugar consumption and/or lack of ideal dental hygiene.
Fluoride Treatments
Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay by making your child’s teeth resistant to acid attacks from the bacteria and sugar which accumulates in the soft food that is not brushed/flosses off the teeth.
Although there is fluoride in drinking water which helps strengthen the enamel of teeth during formation, our team will perform an added topical (external tooth surface) fluoride treatment on your child’s teeth by using a fluoride foam, rinse, or varnish. This will help combat the daily insult of acids of the saliva, the food/drink, and the bacterial by-products that destroy and soften the outer enamel of teeth which then leads to cavities.
The dentist may also recommend the daily use of fluoride toothpaste or mouthwash to maintain the oral health of your child or design a custom, home-fluoride plan based on their particular needs.
Diet
At Jonathan C. Wang, DDS Inc., Dr. Wang will educate you about the importance of a healthy and balanced diet to maintain your child’s oral hygiene. To help your child have good oral hygiene, reduce their intake of sugary foods and drinks. It should be replaced with a well-balanced diet full of green vegetables.
Toothpaste
Dr. Wang will recommend a suitable toothpaste for your child after learning about their dental concerns and performing the required dental procedures. In most cases, Dr. Wang will suggest using a fluoride toothpaste depending upon the age of your child.
First Dental Visit
Your child’s first dental visit should be scheduled within the first six months after their first tooth emerges. At Jonathan C. Wang DDS, Inc.,
Dr. Wang will examine your child’s oral health for any possible concerns, such as decay, bite misalignment, gum inflammation, teething, and jaw development/alignment. If any problem is detected, Dr. Wang will recommend a suitable and minimally-invasive procedure for your child.
